‘Dachau-the significance of this name will never be erased from German history. It stands for all concentration camps which the Nazis established in their territory. ‘
Eugen Kogon
Opened in March 1933 Dachau was the first permanent concentration camp in Nazi Germany and was the last of the main camps to be liberated twelve years later by the U.S army. Dachau was there at the start and at the end of Hitler’s rule, making it unique amongst the others in the camp system. In Dachau we can trace the evolution of how the Nazi’s persecuted their enemies; from a tool of terror to one of systematic murder through slave labour and on your tour you will examine this as you are guided around the former concentration camp.
With us you will learn about how Dachau was built and how it was, in effect, sold to the German people as a necessary tool to protect Germany from her enemies within. Daily life in the camp will also be discussed such as how the new arrivals were dehumanised and turned from individuals into numbers, what sort of work prisoners were made to do, the mentality of the SS and other insights into the Holocaust.
On the tour your memorial qualified guide you will see all the main sights of the former camp, including entering through the original gatehouse, seeing the old maintenance building (now the museum), the barracks where prisoner slept, bunker and visiting the original gas chambers and crematorium.
